The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a good job collecting pet hair, but struggled with thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.
Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and isn’t even far from being as costly as the other top models on this list. It’s got plenty of features that we’d expect to find in a flagship model, but it doesn’t have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top models.
The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is available for use right away. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all that you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big «Clean» button and let it get to work. It will automatically return to its dock when it runs out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that show when the bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or when it loses Wi-Fi.
