How to Fix Faulty Key Repairs

A broken key fob can cause you to lose your day. Luckily, fixing the issue is simple with the right tools and steps.

Always ground yourself before attempting repairs to eliminate static electricity. It takes only several seconds and is a good habit to work with electronics.

Look for repairs any debris under the key that is defective. Breadcrumbs and other pieces of debris often become stuck beneath keys, which prevents them from advancing properly.

Broken Car Keys

It’s easy to take your car keys for granted until they stop working or break at the worst possible time. When you’re trying to open the trunk of your vehicle to buy groceries, opening your doors to go out, or driving your car and heading to work, keys for cars can be a nightmare when they do not work.

Over time, keys for automobiles may wear out. They may be damaged from being dropped or knocked around and the internal components could wear out to the point where they aren’t functioning properly anymore. This is a huge issue since it means you aren’t able to drive unless you have a spare key or have your mechanic fix the problem.

Most broken car keys are easily repaired or replaced. If the key has been damaged in the lock or ignition, you can easily remove the remaining part of the key with pliers or coated wire. A locksmith can also provide you with tools for removal designed to slide across the key and hold the broken pieces in a pincer-like manner.

If the car key is broken in half, a simple and cost-effective solution is to glue the two pieces back together. This is a little difficult as you must ensure that the pieces are aligned, but the results can be extremely effective. It is a good idea to keep a pair of scissors and a roll of tape handy just in case you need to alter the alignment to a degree.

Another method to fix temporarily a broken car key is to replace the battery on the key fob. If your car key fob isn’t turning on and you don’t yet have an alternative then this is the ideal solution. You can accomplish this based on the type and model of your vehicle by taking out the fob, then opening it using an screwdriver.

If the problem is serious such as if your keyfob is not working or is not responding it is necessary to replace it. You can do this at the dealership, but an auto locksmith will usually be cheaper. They will come to you and make any necessary repairs or even replace the key fob.

Broken Key Fobs

Car key fobs aren’t durable, and like all electronic devices, they are prone to malfunctions at some point. If they stop working, they’re not difficult to repair. You’ll first need to determine the issue.

Most of the time when the key fob ceases to function, it’s because the battery is dead. Removing the battery is the simplest and cheapest solution, and is something you can do at home.

If cleaning the fob isn’t working then you can remove it. The fob is equipped with a circuit board within it which houses a number of «contact pads» for every button you can press on the fob (lock buttons or trunk buttons, etc.). The contact pads are made of rubber and are coated in an electrically conducting film that will eventually fade as time passes. Using a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol, you can clean the contacts of your key fob to eliminate any corrosion that could be hindering their functioning.

You could also try a pair or tweezers to replace the contacts on your key fob if you suspect that they are damaged or loose. If you decide to do this it is recommended to apply some silicone on the back of your key fob prior inserting the new contacts. Silicone will make the contacts more secure and keep out water.

Another reason to consider a non-functioning key fob is that it is no longer linked with the vehicle. When you press a key fob, it sends the car a code that tells it what you are trying to accomplish. If the key fob has been unpaired, it won’t recognize the car and not allow you to start the engine.

If you’re unable to get your key fob to pair with the car, it’s time to contact an expert locksmith or dealership technician. They’ll have the tools to reprogram the key fob and get it functioning again. It’s likely that you’ll have to pay for the service but it’s much less than buying a brand new key fob.

Unresponsive Keys

If the keyboard key isn’t working, it could be a complete nightmare. First, ensure that the key isn’t blocked by anything. Over time dust, hair, and other particles can build up and interfere with the circuitry of keys. Try gently getting rid of the key and then cleaning the area underneath it using a rag and ruby alcohol. Sometimes, this is all you need to do to get your key back in working order.

If the key doesn’t work, it’s possible that there’s a problem with your software. Certain keys are mapped to specific actions in games and if your key isn’t performing as you expect it to, you should check your game settings to ensure that the key is correctly assigned to a specific action.

You could also try reinstalling the drivers for your keyboard to fix the problem. Drivers that are outdated or damaged can cause your keyboard to cease working, so you should always keep them updated whenever possible.

The key fob repairs could be damaged. There are two circuits that comprise each key switch and over time these can be damaged until they no longer register when pressed. If this is the case, it is best to replace the keyboard because the keyboard won’t function properly.

If you’ve tried all of these solutions, but your keyboard does not respond, it’s time to have an expert examine your laptop or external keyboard. There could be a physical issue with the membrane that covers your keyboard, or it could be that one of the keys has become damaged.

To find out you’ll need to test the keys on a keyboard tester website. The website will tell you if the keys are registering correctly or not. If they are, then it is most likely a software problem. The other solutions can be applied to restore full functionality. Alternately, you can use an external keyboard for a temporary solution until the internal keyboard is repaired or replaced.

Keys That Don’t Work

Keys that aren’t working can be a huge inconvenience, but they are usually relatively simple to repair. A malfunctioning key could be caused by a piece or dirt under the button, or it may simply not be connected properly to your laptop or keyboard. If you’re not sure whether this is the case, begin by cleaning the keys and then using canned air to eliminate any dirt or dust.

The key could have become misaligned. This is another problem that can be fixed with a professional, though it is more likely to require replacement of the key. If your car key repair key is electronic and cannot be turned by pressing a metal manual key into the ignition, it’s likely that the transponder chip inside has stopped working and you’ll have to get a new one programmed.

If your laptop or external keyboard keys seem to not be not registering any action at all, you can try using a key test website. This can help you figure out if there’s any software interference or problems with the keyboard itself.

Another reason for one key not performing its expected function is that the switch isn’t functioning properly. You can determine whether your keyboard is mechanical by looking underneath the cap to see whether any debris is stuck. If you spot something you want to remove, use canned air to clean it and then remove the cap. This will let you replace the hooks that connect the retainer to the switch, and hopefully bring back functionality to the key.

If a particular key on your keyboard does not perform its intended function in a particular program, it’s likely that the key has been mapped to another action through the game’s keyboard settings. Examine the settings on your keyboard and try pressing the key again to see whether it’s functioning as intended. If it’s not, it’s best to buy a new keyboard and get it installed by an experienced. This is true, especially if you play a game that requires a lot of typing.
